Haemorrhoid sclerotherapy

Haemorrhoid sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure during which a sclerosing agent (sclerosant) is injected into a pile. This causes a local inflammation and sclerosis of the blood vessels, resulting in a shrinkage of the pile.

The procedure does not require special preparations and it is performed on an outpatient basis using local anaesthesia. During the procedure, the patient will not experience any pain or discomfort, and may return to normal activities immediately thereafter.

Haemorrhoid sclerotherapy is most commonly used in the early stages of haemorrhoids, when the piles are small. In the advanced (3-4) stages, or simply in the presence of large piles, a sclerotherapy can be used as a preparatory procedure before surgery to help stop the bleeding. It is often a recommended treatment for elderly patients.

Several piles can be removed during a haemorrhoid sclerotherapy procedure.
