Scar revision

Scar revision is a surgical procedure performed to remove or reduce scars that cause physical and/or psychological discomfort, cause negative sensations during movement, reduce self-confidence, and which cannot be removed by other means.

Scars could be formed due to diseases, injuries, surgeries or burns. When the scars are small and can be easily hidden under clothing, they usually do not cause much discomfort. However, when the scar is large, it attracts unwanted attention, making its owner ashamed to undress on a beach or in the gym. Openly visible scars can also affect intimate relationships. Great discomfort can particularly be felt when the scar is located in clearly visible places: on the face, neck or hands. Scars not only disfigure general aesthetic appearance, but also undermine self-confidence, interfere with daily life and relationships.

Surgical revision of scars is performed for the narrowing of a scar, scar tissue shape correction, or removal of a foreign body from the scar tissue, and in certain other cases. If the scar runs across the skin crease, it is especially visible. During plastic surgery, it is possible to change the shape and direction of the scar, thus, concealing it. Scars in the joint area that restrict their functions or tearing scars can also be surgically corrected. It is recommended to perform scar plastic surgery no earlier than six months after the injury.

Consultation with a plastic surgeon is necessary prior to surgery, who will help evaluate the scar conditions and recommend the most appropriate method of its removal.

Surgical procedure

Scar revision surgery is usually performed under local anaesthesia. The duration of the surgery depends on its scaring extent.

During the operation, the old scar is removed, and all wound layers are sutured layer by layer. Special skin adhesives can be used for skin bonding. The wound heals evenly and the new scar becomes significantly less visible.

Postoperative period

After scar revision, the patient will be discharged home and care will be continued on an outpatient basis.

After the operation, it is very important to follow the doctor’s recommendations: keep away from direct sunlight and solarium, use protective measures and avoid any possible skin damage.

Results to expect after surgery

It is impossible to completely remove the scars. During plastic surgery, the scar area is minimised, making it much less noticeable. Depending on the type of scar and removal method, the result may be visible in a week’s time. Sometimes, patients have to wait a year before they can see the final aesthetic result.
