Labiaplasty (labia correction)

Labiaplasty (otherwise known as labia correction) is a surgical procedure performed on excessively large, asymmetrical or damaged labia. Labial changes can be congenital or caused by a variety of reasons: hormonal imbalance, childbirth, trauma, disease, and age-related changes.

Labia correction is recommended when due to the size or asymmetry of her external genitalia a woman feels physical or psychological discomfort in daily activities, while riding a horse, cycling, having sex, wearing underwear, a bikini or tight clothing. Labiaplasty can be performed on women of all ages, those who have birth and those who did not.

Consultation with a plastic surgeon is necessary prior to surgery, who will help assess the anatomy of the patient’s genitalia, discuss her expectations, the operation plan and other important details.

Surgical procedure

To minimize a patient’s discomfort, InnMed Clinic usually performs this surgery under general anaesthesia, however, local anaesthesia may also be used. The operation takes from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

During the operation, the size and shape of small and/or large labia are corrected and asymmetry is eliminated. Labia correction allows to remove excess tissue, form smaller, aesthetically-shaped small labia and restore the edges of the labia that healed incorrectly after childbirth. The clinic also performs labia augmentation by using autologous fat transfer in the procedure. Often another aesthetic operation can be performed, i.e., correction of tissue around clitoris, together with labiaplasty.

Postoperative period

After surgery, the patient is advised to stay in the clinic for a few hours, then, in the absence of complications, the patient will be discharged home, and care will be continued on an outpatient basis. The time of the postoperative visit will be appointed by the operating doctor.

Complete rest and strict adherence to the doctor’s recommendations are recommended for 2-4 days after the operation. Patients should abstain from sexual intercourse and exercise, avoid swimming pools and saunas for one month; smoking and drinking alcohol is advised against for a period of 6 weeks.

Results to expect after surgery

Patients may experience swelling of the genitalia, decreased sensitivity and discolouration for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. However, these symptoms later disappear – labiaplasty preserves the sensitivity of the labia, tissue texture and pigmentation.

Women can enjoy the changed appearance of genitalia, restored self-confidence and satisfying life.
