Fat transfer to the face
Fat transfer to the face is a surgical procedure that helps to form a beautiful facial contour and give it a more youthful look. During the procedure, fat is removed from those parts of the body where it is in excess (usually the abdomen, thighs and hips) and, after special treatment, injected into the desired areas of the face by small injections.
Over the years, the quantity of fat in the face begins to decline, and the proportions of the bone facial structures change, leading to ageing of the face. As a result of the age-related changes, the skin of the face loses its firmness, the face loses its fullness, which is pushed down by gravity and appears tired. Although it is not possible to stop the ageing process completely, the stem cells in the injected fat help the facial skin to regenerate naturally, while at the same time stopping the ageing process, allowing to adjust the areas already affected by ageing, wrinkles, lip volume and contour and the so-called “barcode” wrinkles around the lips.
Fat grafting operation leaves the face noticeably rejuvenated, and also allows the excess fat to be removed from areas of the body where it is unwanted, which makes the result twice as pleasing. Moreover, the result lasts much longer than after facial rejuvenation injection procedures.
Consultation with a plastic surgeon is necessary prior to surgery, who will help assess the anatomy of the patient’s body, discuss the expectations, the operation plan and other important details.
Fat grafting is performed under general or local anaesthesia and takes about 2 hours.
First, fat is extracted from the body areas discussed prior to the procedure. The fats then undergo treatment and injected with a syringe and cannula in extremely small amounts into those areas of the face where it is lacking the most – cheeks, chin, lips, temples, forehead, nose and eye areas, etc., thus forming a beautiful shape of the face. Fat can successfully correct wrinkles, scars, congenital facial deformities or those acquired by trauma. Taking into account that, on average, fat graft take is 50%, extra fat is injected.
Fat transplantation is a safe procedure because it uses fat cells from the same person. Therefore, allergic reactions or rejection can be avoided.
It is recommended to stay at the clinic for one day following the operation, after which, in the absence of complications, the patient can be discharged home, and care will be continued on an outpatient basis.
The postoperative period includes healing not only of the face but also of the area of the body from which the fat was extracted. Although liposuction is a well-tolerated procedure, bruising and swelling may initially appear on both the face and the graft areas, which will disappear within a week.
It is advisable to limit physical activity and follow sparing daily routine for 7-10 days after the operation, after which a patient can return to work and normal daily activities. It is recommended to avoid sports and strenuous exercise for 6-8 weeks. It is advisable to avoid direct sunlight and solarium for at least half a year after the procedure.
Results to expect after the procedure
The first results are visible after a few weeks, when the swelling has subsided, but the final result will become clear after a few months.
The result of fat transfer to the face is smoothed wrinkles, firmer, brighter and more vibrant facial skin, a beautiful facial contour and a more youthful appearance. The face will look less tired and the quality of the skin will improve. Lip augmentation with fat allows to achieve naturally plump and fresh lips.
It is important to know that the fullness and firmness of the face is affected by weight fluctuations, therefore, in order to enjoy the results of the operation as long as possible, it is recommended to stick to a healthy diet, exercise and maintain a stable weight.
