Face lift

Facelift is a surgical procedure performed when a patient experiences discomfort due to facial changes caused by the ageing process: wrinkles, sagging skin, lost facial contour, etc.

Facial skin ageing is inevitable. It is influenced by many factors: genetics, lifestyle, environmental impact, stress or gravity. During the face lift surgery, the lower and central parts of the face are raised, wrinkles are smoothed out, and the oval of the face is restored.

Consultation with a plastic surgeon is necessary prior to face lift surgery, who will help assess the facial condition, discuss the patient’s expectations, pan and details of the surgery. For a maximum effect, neck lift surgery can be performed at the same time. In the case of minor changes, the patient may be advised on non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures or a combination of surgical and non-surgical treatments.

Surgical procedure

Face lift is performed under general anaesthesia. Depending on the extent of the surgery, it takes about 3-5 hours.

Incisions are made in the naturally formed creases of skin and at along the hairline, from the ear to the temporal area and in the hairy area behind the ears. This is to ensure that postoperative scars are as little noticeable as possible. During the operation, the skin above the cheeks and neck is separated from the deeper soft tissues. The soft tissues are lifted and sutured, removing excess if necessary. Excess skin is also removed and the rest of the skin is raised. Excess adipose tissue in the chin and neck are can be removed as needed.

If a neck lift operation is performed at the same time, it involves strengthening of the neck muscles, removal of excess fat layer from the neck, excess skin, while the remaining skin is stretched and fixated to form a beautiful angle between the chin and neck.

After the operation, the face is covered with a special bandage and a compression mask is applied.

Postoperative period

It is recommended to stay at the clinic the first day following the operation, after which, in the absence of complications, the patient can be discharged home, and care will be continued on an outpatient basis. Drains are removed on the first or second day after surgery. The sutures are removed after wound heals, approximately 7 to 10 days after surgery. The time of the postoperative visit will be appointed by the operating doctor.

In the first three days after the operation, the face may be swollen; cold compresses are recommended to reduce swelling. To facilitate smooth the postoperative period, it is recommended to maintain a sparing regime for about a week, and avoid bending; it is recommended to sleep in a cool room, with one’s head raised, and wash hair with the head tilted back. You can return to work or other normal activities in 7 to 14 days after the operation, but it is advisable to avoid intense activities and sports for at least 4-6 weeks.

It is recommended to protect the face, particularly scars, from direct sunlight, avoid solariums and use protective creams for about 6 months after the operation.

Results to expect after surgery

Distinct changes are seen as early as in 2 weeks, but the final outcome of the operation can be evaluated in 3-6 months after the operation.

The face lift operation restores a more youthful appearance of the face, the face becomes firmer, smoother, with more pronounced contours.
