Arm lift (otherwise known as brachioplasty) is a surgical procedure performed when changes in weight, lack of exercise, loss of muscle mass, ageing or heredity characteristics cause the tissues and skin of the upper arm (from shoulder to elbow) to sag, resulting in skin wrinkles. This condition cannot be corrected by exercise, massage or cosmetic products. The only effective way to restore youthful appearance of the arms is plastic surgery.
Consultation with a plastic surgeon is necessary prior to surgery, who will help assess the anatomy of the patient’s arms, and discuss the expectations, surgery plan and details.
Arm lift is performed under general anaesthesia, it takes on average about 1-2 hours. T-shaped, S-shaped incisions or so-called ‘fish incisions’ are usually made on the inside of the arms extending from the armpit area to the elbows. The excess hanging skin in the upper arm is then reduced, the main supporting tissue forming the shape of the upper arm is tensioned and smoothed, and the excess fat accumulated in the upper arm is removed. All skin irregularities, pigment spots and roughness can be removed during the operation.
When a minor arm correction is required, incisions can be made only in the armpit area, excess subcutaneous fat is removed, and sagging skin is stretched toward the shoulders and fixed. This minimally invasive method of surgery ensures an excellent result and does not leave visible postoperative scars.
Arm lift is often performed in combination with lipoxation (liposuction), which allows to achieve the maximum rejuvenating effect in the targeted site. At the request of the patient, brachioplasty can be performed in combination with other plastic surgeries.
It is recommended to stay at the clinic for one day after the operation, after which, in the absence of complications, the care will be continued on an outpatient basis. The time of the postoperative visit will be appointed by the operating doctor.
Sutures are removed after a few weeks. It is recommended to wear compression sleeves, avoid swimming pools, saunas, direct sunlight and solarium rays for about 6 weeks after the surgery.
Results to expect after surgery
A smoother and firmer hand contour is visible immediately after surgery, but the final aesthetic result can be seen after about 2 months. Arm lift restores the natural shape of the skin of hands, making them noticeably rejuvenated. A small, thin scar will remain at the incision site.
